We provide separate boys' and girls' programs, entitled Mariposa's Art for girls and Abraxis for boys, to allow each group the freedom and ability to develop strong relationships and learn from each other. Our year-long programs are broken into four eight-week program cycles which focus on recognizing key health issues; expanding leadership skills; making positive choices; and exploring art, music, and dance. Writing and public speaking activities are integrated into each lesson.

Program Cycle 1:
Speak Up and Express Yourself!

Nothing is gained through shyness! In this opening series of our program we focus on creating a strong, safe group creative environment. We highlight and practice the importance of feeling confident, speaking up and expressing our ideas. We create this safety and opportunity to practice our confident speaking skills through opening circles, opinion games, and Make-A-Statement art projects! We also focus on understanding our talents and strengths and creating a variety of art that represents our unique personalities!

Program Cycle 2:
Body Image & Health

What makes someone really beautiful? What is it to be really cool? This series explores how our pursuit of our talents and how we treat others makes us beautiful, for the girls, and cool, for the boys. Through art and writing activities, all youth investigate nurturing ourselves, understanding the power of the media, affirming others, and health issues including healthy sexuality, drugs & alcohol, nutrition, and exercise. Music and dance are intertwined, too!

Program Cycle 3:
Conflict Resolution

How do you talk to a teacher to explain your side of things? How do you use the tone of your voice to solve arguments instead of shut them down? We explore conflict resolution, communication, and gang awareness through theater games, imaginative art, group music and dance games, and self-defense workshops. We also investigate powerful role models in our community and in the media.

Program Cycle 4:
Dreaming Big!

You are the only limit that you place on yourself—nothing is impossible if you combine big dreams with lots of action! We envision our future, create micro-steps to achieve goals, explore career and college options, and emphasize making healthy choices in the present to protect future goals. Our art details our dreams and our community service projects and performances showcase our ability to create action steps to achieve a big goal.
